Demolition has begun on 17 abandoned houses and low rise apartments at the Legion West site on the Upper East Side. Fencing has been put up around the houses while construction crews have started work on the tear down.

In September 2016, the houses were vacated and boarded up. During this time the American Legion Post 29 building was in the process of being demolished after being empty for months.

The 6.45 acre site was purchased by Global City Development starting in December 2015 to February 2016 for $10.9 million with plans to build a luxury condo called Legion West. In November 2016, the Miami Development Review Board approved building a 81 foot tall apartment called Legion East with 237 units, 435 parking spaces and a new 15,000 square foot American Legion Building on the site of where the previous American Legion Building was torn down at 6445 NE 7th Ave. Global City Investments is leasing the land from American Legions for 75 years.

On the Legion West site, Global City Development is looking to obtain a special area plan from the city to include two acres of Legion Memorial Park and increase the height by 15 stories. The plans for Legion West have been revealed, but there is the possibility for three 15 stories towers at a height of 176 feet with 476 residential units.
